This broodingly opaque, beetle-shell-black wine has a nose bursting out of the glass. It smells of cola, licorice and nougat mixed into a cornucopia of black fruits. Slightly tart acidity accompanies chewy, strapping tannins and pulls the wine into a solid finish laced with milk chocolate. Built like a linebacker, this has grip and vigor. The primary drawback is that it is so high in alcohol that it feels lightly laced with distilled spirit. Between its depth of flavors and grainy, gritty tannins, this is a solid match for grilled steaks. Drink now–2018.
