This showcases an impenetrable black core, with a brickish, mulberry-colored rim. It has an exuberantly spicy nose of cracked pepper, North African spices and roasted plums. The palate brings out similar characteristics, with baked cherry and licorice alongside nuances of game, vanilla bean and charcoal. Full bodied, with generous alcohol, the wine seems to warm the palate. For such a big wine, the tannins are impressively tame. The finish lingers, with a lightly mouthcoating viscosity. A crowd-pleaser for all sorts of American wine lovers, especially those that like a touch of tobacco-like development. Drink now–2018.
