Stark black at the core, with a crimson-inflected rim, this wine smells funky. There’s hung game, beef jerky, peppercorn, gunpowder, savory bay leaf, graphite and cola. Though intriguing, there’s nothing fresh about the fruit on the palate. Additionally, the tannins are beginning to dry out, becoming firm and saliva-wicking. Still, there’s something intriguing here, especially given the generous finish, so perhaps a younger vintage would be more accessible. Drink now through 2017.
