Dark black at the core, this has a bright maroon meniscus. Its nose is youthful and fruit-driven, with loads of licorice and sweet spice-laden blackberries and blackcurrants. Unfortunately, the palate is dominated by the oaky tones of vanilla and milk chocolate. This is a hulking and opulently textured wine, with a small vein of lifting acidity and broad, shard-like tannins. Overall, this would work as a casual by-the-glass selection for those that like sweet oak influences. Moreover, there’s the taste of ambition here, so it’s worth looking at future vintages. Drink now through 2018.
