Irvine  2016 The Estate   Shiraz (Barossa Valley)

abv: 14.6 | Price Tier: $$

This wine is so impressively black and opaque, with a Bonne Maman’s Blackberry Preserves aroma. However, on the first sip it was actually rather fresh, delightfully nuanced and not at all approaching overripe. The first whiff offers a pine needle scent before the blackberry, black currant and tar pour in. It’s an in-your-face wine that divulges highly nuanced layers once you taste past the bluster. The feathered, grippy feeling at the end of the long finish is a testament to its well-structured tannins. Drink now–2022.
