Tar black at the core, this wine has a bright mulberry rim. Its nose is reserved, with powerful notes of peat and potting soil, and it is just a touch stinky. With aeration, blackberries, prunes and blackcurrants surface. The attack suggests a hint of residual sugar, which helps plump up and smooth out the midpalate. The overt acidity jostles the mouthfeel, while the tannins are smooth and almost creamy. The flavors are one-note, echoing the aromatics. This is a simple wine, but it’s accessible and sure to have a solid following. Drink through 2016.
